KUMON
What started fifty years ago with a father’s simple desire to help his son with his maths homework, has today developed into a global network of students. Every hour worldwide, someone somewhere is studying Kumon.
Kumon, who today offers students the chance to develop their academic and life skills at after-school classes, has its origins in a simple story of family life. A concerned mother came across a crumpled maths test in her young son’s pocket. Looking more closely, she noticed that his score was lower than expected. When she showed this to her husband, Toru Kumon, who happened to be a maths teacher, he decided there and then to help his son. Each and every night, Toru Kumon carefully prepared maths problems for his son to solve, aiming to help him improve his school marks and build confidence.
Mr Kumon’s efforts proved to be worthwhile. By studying his father’s exercises for just thirty minutes each day, young Takeshi Kumon began to make rapid progress in his studies. Word spread from town to town throughout the region and then throughout Japan. Study centres opened all over the country and then the message spread wider still from country to country, transcending the barriers of language and culture.
This is how the worldwide Kumon phenomenon began. In the 586 centres across the UK & Ireland today, children of all ages and abilities can study maths or English, develop confidence and study skills and realise their true potential. From humble beginnings in 1958 to millions of students worldwide, we are proud to be celebrating our 50th anniversary this year.
Each and every child has unlimited potential. Through individualised study we believe that each child can grow, develop and realise that potential. We at Kumon have been entrusted with helping to educate millions of children and we are proud to hold such a responsibility. Your child too could benefit from such a network of experience, focused on helping them to achieve their dreams and goals.
